Polarized Filter Question

Fishing eagles – the love affair

Like every true South African bush lover, I have always loved fish eagles. Their distinctive calls are widely accepted as the trademark call of the African bush. Where we live we often hear these calls and if you are lucky you can see them circling high above the house.  However it was not until mid 2009 when visiting my daughter in Vancouver, Canada that this love affair with the fish eating eagles really took off. We were fishing from a boat near Bird point retreat when we noticed a Bald…

Enige voorstelle?

I am looking for insurance for my camera gear.  Any suggestions who I might use?

Thank you

Ek en Alma hetverlede week gaan kyk en die riviere was baie sterk in vloed en paaiegesluit. Lees meer daaroor hier:…

Extreme Temperatures

A question, can anybody tell me if the temperature will damage a camera, the lens, etc. or not as the summer temperature ranges between 40 and 52 degrees Celsius? If so what precautions would be recommended?

Levitation Photography

Now that I've moved to the desert here in the Middle East, I'm not exposed to the beautiful sea and landscapes of South Africa. So now I have to turn my direction to new ideas and resources, which in the end, have turned out to be pretty fun and challenging at the same time.

Last week I saw some images online of people floating or "levitating" or even flying in their images and it intrigued me so much that I just had to find out how they managed to get it right. So I searched…

Studying Spotted eagle owls at the nest

Spotted eagle owls are our most common owl and are found in the whole of South Africa. They adapted well to human presence and are often found in gardens, even in the city!

Spotted eagle owls will normally nest in a scraped hollow on the ground but will sometimes also make use of a fork in a large tree as in this instance. This site was used by this pair in 2010 but was not used last year.  I keep a record of all nest sites of the different owl species in our area…

A sample as to how I made Almighty

Alighty

Took the 3 different photos, but of the same place, just different wave breaks and blended them together into 1 image in Photoshop, by masking in the different water areas, then with the 1 image after being flatened, I changed its exposures by using levels to create my own 3 exposures.

Then from there, I placed them into Photomatix, created my HDR, and then back into Photoshop to add the finishing touches:

1. levels to make sure my…

Why I do Photocritic?

I have a passion.

We'll, I need to rephrase this - I am a passionate human being. I do what I do because I have a passion and I am passionate about what I do. Without the passion, whatever is done is mechanical or it quickly becomes achievement driven. When I do what I do with the constant expectation that I will be rewarded in some applicable or relevant way, I might as well just stop doing what I am doing. It is the peace, the happiness, the joy, that realizes in me - when I…
